I was reading hyperbole and a half’s blog entry explaining their experience of depression and decided to make another sketchy comic based on my experiences with anxiety, which is another mental illness I think people tend to misunderstand quite frequently

Hopefully this will be of use to some people - whether they suffer from anxiety themselves or if they just want to know more about it

Haven’t you ever had a dream? A dream that you could change the world. A dream that you could be somebody’s hero. I don’t know about you but I grew up reading fairytales. I grew up imagining dragons slain, princesses rescued, and happily ever afters. I grew up being told that dreams could come true if you just believe. And maybe I was a naïve little kid. And maybe I was. But I have a story to tell you.

This is a story about a girl who lived in an area of town so Irish that the traffic light is hung upside down. A girl who never owned a disney movie. A girl I had the pleasure of meeting the first day of seventh grade.

I had never had a locker before and I was convinced that within the ten minutes since I had first attempted to open it I had somehow broken the thing. The girl at the locker next to me turns around and within seconds the locker creaks open. Her name was Tricia.

I have so many stories about her in highschool. Like the time she wrote a speech for english class in five minutes. A speech about how to do a cartwheel. A speech that was somehow very interesting. There was also the time she lost her temper and cut the sleaves off the fur coat of a rude woman at a restaurant. I think its safe to say she had some guts. When friends would say things behind my back, she would routinely make them eat their words and once or twice her fist.

After I left for college, we would still get together whenever I was home. We would go see these really stupid movies, reminisce about old friends, and how lame high school was. However, she had become a girl with an alcohol addiction, a drug problem, and an abusive significant other. Tricia used to say that she was grateful that I didn’t judge her for any of it but mostly I didn’t know what to say.

Skip to 2013, January 6^th; I get a call. Twenty minutes later, I arrive to find her and the room she is in an absolute wreck. There is blue hair dye everywhere and alcohol puddles on the floor. Her dad had died suddenly; she hadn’t slept in days. When she finally fell asleep, I left her a note that I would see her after winter quarter was over. Unfortunately, exactly a month later I received a Facebook message that Tricia had taken her own life.

Shock, confusion, disbelief: I feel these things. That’s not how it’s supposed to end. Prince Charming isn’t supposed to carry a corpse back to his castle. The Huntsman is supposed to save Red Ridding Hood. The story can’t end with Goldilocks breaking her neck jumping out a window. It just can’t. This is the girl who got into Dartmouth and Harvard on a free ride. This is the girl with a heart of gold and an will of iron. This girl was special. She was my hero; why doesn’t she get a happy ending?

Three months later, I have gotten to thinking “what if I am her happy ending?”. I can stand up here in front of you and say what she no longer can. I can dare you to be individuals, to stand up for yourself and others in need, to be passionate about what you truly believe in. I can dare you to analyze your relationships with people and things to decide if they really are good for you or damaging your wellbeing. But most of all, I can dare you to never settle for being a good person; aim to be a great one. Tell others that you care about them as often as you can because one day they won’t be there. No matter how or when that happens I guarentee you will be shocked.

On top of that, I think someone needs to talk about suicide. Truth is, what’s scarier than standing up in front of you giving this speech, is knowing that every fifteen minutes another person ends their own life. The Suicide Prevention Services of America says that suicide is preventable and I agree. We can make a difference. We can change the world.

Tricia Alwyn was my hero. I hope to someday inspire someone as she inspired me. I still believe in fairy tales. And maybe I’m still the same naïve little kid. And maybe I am. But I have to ask you, “Haven’t you ever had a dream?”

I finally did it; I wrote my last public speaking speech!

Today is May 2nd, the day the battle of Hogwarts 14 years ago. The day that Harry, Ron and Hermione snuck back into Hogwarts and destroyed the Horcruxes. The day that Harry finally defeated Voldemort. We remember everyone who fought in the war and all those who died. Fred Weasley, Nymphadora Tonks, Remus Lupin, Colin Creevey, Severus Snape and more. May we raise our wands to those who fought and died. Remember, remember May 2nd 1998.
